Johanna denied a first title
JOHANNA KONTA’s wait for a first title on home soil continues after the Brit was stunned in the Aegon Open Final in Nottingham.
World No.70 Donna Vekic came from a set down to win her second WTA singles crown 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.
Konta, eighth in the world rankings, hoped to become the first British woman to land a singles title at home since Sue Barker in 1981.
But the top seed said: “She was continuously able to raise her level all throughout that match. I wasn’t able to stay with her.”
Vekic, 20, said: “The last time I played a final I wasn’t allowed to have champagne. I’m going to drink a bottle with my team to celebrate.”
