EUROPEAN LOWDOWN: WHO CELTS COULD FACE

-

LINFIELD – The Northern Irish side haven’t progressed from the qualifying rounds of any European competition since 1994, when they were beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Odense in the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Since then they’ve won just seven of their 47 European ties, losing 26 of them.

Linfield have won 52 Irish league titles from 1891, a record second only in world football to Rangers, who won 54 before their descent into liquidation back in 2012.

Their biggest winning margin in Europe came when they thrashed Aris of Luxembourg 6-1 in a European Cup tie at Windsor Park in 1966. They reached the quarter-finals that season, which remains the club’s best achievement.

Linfield’s biggest defeat was an 8-0 hammering away to PSV Eindhoven nine years later.

Manager David Healy faced Celtic three times during his 18 months at Ibrox, winning once and losing twice.

– The San Marino minnows are based in Montegiardino, a community with a population of 910 and an area of 3.31 square kilometres.

They have lost each of their 10 qualifying round ties, scoring one goal and conceding 35.

Their best result was a 1-0 home defeat by Estonians Levadia Tallinn in the Champions League qualifiers three years ago. Juventus’ Under-19 side battered La Fiorita 16-0 in a friendly match in 2015. La Fiorita play at the Stadio Igor Crescentini, which has a capacity of 500.

Chairman Alan Gasperoni also acts as their press officer.

All 15 clubs in the Campionato Sammarinese are amateurs. There is no relegation because there are no other clubs.
