IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT

- It was a remarkable achievement and nothing and nobody can take that away

that Old Firm monopoly and who knows who’ll do that in the season ahead?

“Motherwell showed the consistency required to finish third, second and second again in recent seasons and Aberdeen have taken over that mantle.

Former Rangers midfielder Black reckons the South Africanbased Light Blues chairman may regret his inflammatory choice of words which could come back to bite him if Pedro Caixinha’s reign doesn’t deliver results.

He said: “Actions will always speak louder than words and the way to do your talking is on the park. Rangers have had their glory days. Stuart McCall talks with such pride about his time playing at Ibrox and being part of the ninein-a-row squad. That was a great achievement of its time.

“It was a golden period where he played alongside a lot of top players and they were up against a strong Celtic side back then.

“King can say what he wants but it’s a dangerous game to play having a go at Celtic’s achievements no matter his motivation.

“It may serve to backfire on him as comments need to be backed up and they also stir up their rivals.

“What we don’t want is Celtic to be winning the league by 30 or 40 points and it’s up to the likes of Rangers to step up to the plate.”

Black has kept a close eye on events north of the border and believes Rangers won’t be the only side enhancing the quality of a top flight that is growing from strength to strength.

He said: “I believe the Premiership is only going to get stronger.

“This season you have the reintroduction of Hibs and that will only help to make it stronger.

“The resurgence of the Edinburgh clubs will be interesting as both Hibs and Hearts will get stronger. We’re trying to get as many of the Scottish clubs as strong as possible as there are people in England who look at the league with a sarcasm when they ask me, ‘Who’s going to win it this year?’

“Everyone knows it’s going to be Celtic. I hope they qualify for the Champions League group stage this season but the financial clout they have sets them aside.

“It’s up to the rest of our clubs to try to claw that gap back as quickly as possible. But it’s easier said than done.”
