Teenager survives bear bite

A TEENAGE camper woke to find his head clamped in a bear’s jaws.

But the brave 19-year-old managed to fight off the beast by punching it until friends came to his aid.

The wilderness camp counsellor, named only as Dylan, said he woke up to a “crunching sound” with his head in the black bear’s mouth as it tried to drag him away.

The bear dragged him about 12ft before he was able to free himself.

Then other staff members at the camp in Colorado, US, heard his cries and arrived to help him.

The group yelled and hit the bear until it let Dylan go and fled into the woods.

The shocking incident took place at Glacier View Ranch, which is 50 miles northwest of Denver.

Dylan was left with a deep bloody gouge in the back of his head and several marks on his forehead.

He said: “The crunching noise, I guess, was the teeth scraping against the skull as it dug in.”

Dylan and the other staffers were near tepees where campers aged 12 and 13 were sleeping but none of them were hurt.

Black bears are not usually aggressive but have attacked several people in the western US recently.

A woman and her dogs were attacked in Idaho last week after they apparently surprised an adult bear and her cub.
