TRAGIC Charlie Gard lost his fight for life yesterday, just days after his parents’ legal battle ended. A statement from Connie Yates and Chris Gard said: “Our beautiful little boy has gone.”

LITTLE Charlie Gard died yesterday – just days before his first birthday.

Parents Connie Yates, 31, and Chris Gard, 32, were at his side as his life support was switched off.

Heartbroken Connie said: “Our beautiful little boy has gone.”

Charlie’s fight for life against overwhelming odds captured hearts not only in the UK but around the world.

As the poorly tot clung on amid bitter court fights over his treatment, supporters formed “Charlie’s Army”.

His plight even inspired interventions by the Pope and US president Donald Trump.

But yesterday, heartbroken mum Connie revealed she had bid her precious boy “sleep tight” for the last time.

In an emotional message, she said: “Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie.”

Charlie suffered from mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a rare condition causing muscle weakness and progressive brain damage.

As his condition deteriorated, he was so ill he couldn’t breathe without a ventilator.

He was transferred from the intensive care unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital to a private hospice, where his life support was withdrawn.

It was the final blow for his parents, who raised £1.3million and fought a five-month battle with Great Ormond Street to take him for experimental treatment in the US.

As tributes began pouring in last night, Pope Francis tweeted: “I entrust little Charlie to the Father and pray for his parents and all those who loved him.”

US vice president Mike Pence wrote: “Saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Gard.

“Karen and I offer our prayers and condolences to his loving parents.” UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “deeply saddened” at the news and her thoughts and prayers were with Charlie’s parents.

A spokesman for Great Ormond Street added: “Everyone sends their heartfelt condolences to Charlie’s parents and loved ones at this very sad time.”
