EDGAR WANTS HEARTS JOB
Dutch legend Edgar applies for Jambos job and former England boss Steve lines up talks with Budge and Levein
EDGAR DAVIDS is the latest high-profile name to throw his name into the ring for the Hearts job as ex-England boss Steve McClaren last night emerged as a major candidate.
The Holland legend is desperate for another crack at management in Britain and sees Tynecastle as the perfect opportunity.
McClaren is also looking for a dugout return after being sacked by English Championship side Derby for a second time in March.
The 56-year-old, who has also bossed Newcastle and Wolfsburg, knows Jambos director of football Craig Levein and is in the frame.
And Davids is another name for Hearts chiefs to consider after the 74-times capped former midfielder submitted his application.
The 44-year-old was set to apply for the Aberdeen hotseat if Derek
McInnes had quit Pittodrie for Sunderland in the summer and has been keeping an eye on Scottish football.
Davids – nicknamed the Pitbull – enjoyed an illustrious playing career at international and club level, winning the Champions League with Ajax, three Serie A titles at Juventus as well as the Coppa Italia with Inter Milan. But his only dugout experience came at Barnet in a surreal and ill-fated 15-month spell during which they were relegated from the English Football League.
Davids, though, is keen on a managerial return more than two and a half years on from his Bees exit and submitted his application to Jambos chiefs last
Friday as they search for a successor to sacked Ian Cathro.
Levein and owner Ann Budge are compiling a shortlist with Under-20s coach Jon Daly placed in interim charge.
Davids has been studying academies, including at his old club Ajax, and believes his desire to develop young players is in line with the Hearts model. The Dutchman also had a spell working alongside former Manchester City defender Michel Vonk at SC Telstar – a second-tier side in his homeland – after obtaining his coaching badges.
Speaking at the time, Davids said: “I think you should keep developing.
“Some guys have their papers for a couple of years but now they are at home. I’m very pleased to inspire and train with youngsters.”
Davids was last linked with a move to Scotland in 2003 when madcap former Dundee director Giovanni di Stefano claimed he was going to sign him on a £1.7million, five-month loan deal shortly before the Dark Blues went into administration.
