No big deal

Hayley insists switch from Celts to Gers was a winner

- LISA GRAY

WHEN Hayley Sinclair swapped Celtic for Rangers she joined a list of players – including Mo Johnston and Kenny Miller - who have played for both clubs.

But the midfielder reckons crossing the Old Firm divide was no big deal.

And she insists the switch to the Light Blues is the best move she has ever made.

Sinclair said: “This is my third year at Rangers and, before that, I was at Celtic for five years.

“I came through the academy there and worked my way up but I just felt as though I needed a change.

“Coming to Rangers has really improved my game.

“It wasn’t really a big deal playing for both Old Firm clubs. I don’t think it’s as big a deal in women’s football as it is in men’s.

“In women’s football, there are some girls who have played for nearly every team in the Premier League.

“I don’t regret my decision to join Rangers even if some people thought, ‘That’s a weird one’. It’s probably the best decision I’ve made in football.”

Rangers sit sixth in SWPL1 and Sinclair admits they should have done better in games so far this season.

But she’s confident they’ll soon reap the benefits of head coach Amy McDonald’s experience after the former Scotland star took over in May.

Sinclair said: “Amy really knows JUST 10 miles outside of Edinburgh, in the town of Bonnyrigg, the girls’ football teams are starting to bloom.

Rose have fielded teams from Under-9s to Under-17s for years with great success. And, for the first time next term, they’re fielding a senior side.

Club secretary Colin McEwan said: “It’s all due to the success of the what she’s doing. She’s so experienced and we feel we are learning from her in every training session.”

Rangers beat Old Firm rivals Celtic last month and Sinclair is adamant the focus now is on making the most of the remaining games and climbing as far up the table as possible.

She said: “For the second half of the season we are aiming to finish in a higher position.” pathway and the club being such a great community hub.

“On the whole, Bonnyrigg keeps the same girls at the club during their whole footballing journey.

“Now we have a senior team so they can see a future into adulthood.”

The Bonnyrigg senior team have been training for a couple of months and will be making their league debut in February.

Rose manager Robin Laing said: “It’s an exciting time for all of us, especially the players. To be the first senior Ladies team in Midlothian is also something we are extremely proud of.”
