We are ready to govern
JEREMY Corbyn will today promise to give “power to the people” by leading the most radical Labour post-war government Britain has seen.
He will wind up an enthusiastic party conference in Brighton with a leader’s speech putting the Tories on notice that Labour are on the threshold of power.
The declaration will be lapped up by left-wing delegates convinced they’d win a general election at a moment’s notice.
But the bold claim came as Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said they were fully prepared for a run on the pound and an economic crash if they enacted their radical re-nationalisation plans in Downing Street.
The admission that he’s ready for a “siege” economy and a financial crisis if Corbyn wins put the leadership on the defensive.
But Corbyn said: “What he is doing is saying we look at all scenarios that may affect a Labour government.”
Labour officials last night briefed that the “Corbyn-omics” of nationalising utilities and ending PFI schemes was the “new common sense” and resonated with a public angry at rip-off corporations running their lives.
Corbyn will admit that his performance in the June election was not quite enough but insist that by doubling down on his radical economics, he now leads a government in waiting.
He will say: “Our message to the country could not be clearer: Labour is ready. Ready to tackle inequality. Ready to rebuild our NHS. Ready to give opportunity to young people, dignity and security to older people.
“Ready to invest in our economy and meet the challenges of climate change and automation. Ready to put peace and justice at the heart of foreign policy. And ready to build a new and progressive relationship with Europe. We are ready for government.”
He will also say that Labour are on the way back in Scotland and make peace with Kezia Dugdale.
Corbyn will say: “The Scottish people understand Labour is again the champion of social justice. And thank you Kezia. The next Scottish leader will build on the solid foundations you have helped build. Our unifying socialist message will continue to inspire people north
and south of the Border.”
