Brawl could KO Stokes for Ashes

-

BEN STOKES’ Ashes future is in doubt after a late-night brawl that put a member of the public in hospital.

Stokes was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm after the fight at 2.35am on Monday and is waiting to see whether he will be charged.

But he is also awaiting the results of an X-ray on his right hand that could render him unavailable for at least the first part of England’s Ashes tour regardless of any potential court case.

Selectors are still planning to name the 26-year-old in the squad but with no guarantees that he will actually make it to Australia to take part in the first Test on November 23.

Stokes’ position as vicecaptain is also under threat.

● Scotland prepared for next week’s World League clashes against Papua New Guinea with a three-wicket win over Auckland Aces in Queensland. ATHLETICS: Laura Muir says showdowns against Scottish rival Eilish McColgan will help them both improve. The 1500metres and 3000m European indoor champion is ready to battle to get back the Scottish 5000m record she lost to McColgan earlier this month.

Muir said: “Competing at the same high level can maybe help us both to bring out a bit extra. There may be some records changing hands along the way.” CYCLING: Six-time Olympic champion Jason Kenny, 29, has decided against retiring and is to continue racing until after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. TENNIS: Kyle Edmund beat Bernard Tomic 6-4 6-2 in the Chengdu Open in China.
