Joe’s been told he May find it tough going

- GORDON BANNERMAN

ST JOHNSTONE’S Joe Shaughnessy has never faced Stevie May but his team-mates have already given him a crash course on what to expect.

Aberdeen new boy May will line up against the Perth club – where he was a hero – for the first time on Saturday at Pittodrie.

Shaughnessy, who arrived at McDiarmid Park after the striker headed for Sheffield Wednesday three years ago, is expecting nothing but a tough examination of his defensive skills.

Third-placed Saints head for Pittodrie this weekend to face a Dons side in second spot, with the May factor an interesting sub-plot.

Former Pittodrie centre-half Shaughnessy said: “I don’t think I’ve ever played against Stevie but you can see what he’s got and he has hit the ground running since joining Aberdeen. You’d definitely say he’s up there with the best in the league.

“Everyone here loves him so it will be a good test and hopefully we can deal with him.

“I’m sure Steven Anderson will know his game inside out. Maybe I’ll pass Stevie on to him!”

Shaughnessy, 25, has been impressed by the Dons but suspects there’s more to come from his former team. He added: “They’ve had a big turnaround of players and they’re probably still trying to figure out their best team.

“Jonny Hayes and Niall McGinn were brilliant for them for a few years and they lost another couple of big players in Ryan Jack and Ash Taylor. That was the spine of their team for a few seasons.

“They’ve made some good signings to replace them though.”
