Ex-council employee insists a colleague went to home and tried to see child

A FORMER social worker has spoken out about the tragic case of murdered toddler Liam Fee.

Barbara Barnes has confirmed details the Daily Record revealed soon after Liam’s death in 2014.

We told how Fife Council had ample opportunities to save the two-year-old from his mother Rachel Fee and her partner Nyomi Fee.

The evil couple are serving life for murder after Liam was found dead at his home in Thornton with heart injuries after a severe blunt-force trauma to his chest and abdomen.

At the time, a whistleblower told the Record there were “six or seven calls from professionals expressing concern over Liam” between January and March 2014.

Fife Council refused to comment on the allegations as a review into the case was ongoing.

Now, Barbara – who worked in the Children and Families Unit in Glenrothes – has confirmed a social

worker visited the Fees shortly before Liam died. However, no action was taken and the visit was not mentioned in the summary of the official investigation into his death.

Barbara arranged the visit after concerns were raised by hospital staff.

She said: “It was conducted as there was a note from the duty worker for the other team, who went out.

“The child was in the bedroom. He’d asked to see him but these two women refused. They said he suffered from autism, seeing a strange man would upset him and it would take them hours to calm him down again. So, the notes then indicated he hadn’t seen this child.”

Weeks later, Liam was murdered by Rachel and Nyomi.

The official investigation into Liam’s death said services had struggled to see through the actions of “devious and manipulative parents”.

Barbara, who has since left Fife Council, said the omission of these events from the published summary was a concern. She said: “It’s not a true reflection of the situation involving this boy’s death.”

Steve Grimmond, chairman of the Fife Chief Officers’ Public Safety Group, said: “Some details were not included in the Learning Summary to protect the privacy of others involved.”
