MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE

PS4

-

IT’S not often that a game can count on as much past success as Marvel vs Capcom Infinite can.

It’s made up of two huge franchises.

Marvel’s films like Iron Man, Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy have dominated at the box office.

And Capcom’s video games over the past 20 years like Street Fighter and Resident Evil have made it a huge hitter.

It’s given Marvel vs Capcom Infinite some real muscle to use and mould into a game worthy of carrying two such iconic names.

Infinite does its best to carry the torch through a decent story mode, which will have fans of the arcadestyle of fighting at its many hits combo action purring with delight.

But the game really excels in the arcade and versus modes, whether you are playing against pals or online.

Story mode makes good use of a new component which allows you to jump between two characters mid-fight.

If you are getting pounded with a combo, there’s a chance to switch character to someone who can take more hits thanks to a full bar of health.

It’s been used before in other games but this is the most fluid and slick I’ve felt it in my experience as a fight game fan.

Gameplay is as you would expect – fights at a frenetic pace and mega fun controlling the likes of Ryu or The Hulk.

Fighting with Rocket Racoon from Guardians of the Galaxy in one fight then as Arthur from Super Ghouls and Ghosts from 1992, meanwhile, gave me a chuckle.

The art style has changed slightly from last time and I can’t say I’m overly impressed. Having played Injustice 2 earlier this year, and other fight games in the last couple of years, it just feels lacklustre at times.

I would have liked to have seen more attention paid to the muchloved characters of both the Marvel franchise and of Capcom’s.

There are only about 30 characters to chose from, including only a few new ones compared with the original, I was a little disappointed.

I’m hoping that some much-needed DLC will be available soon.

But it’s all great fun once you get going and playing against your mates or online against a stranger and it will give as much in the way of thrills and excitement as you would get from any fight game.
