Klassy way to raise money

CLASSIC FM presenter Myleene Klass got into the spirit of things during Global Radio’s Make Some Noise Day yesterday.

She grabbed a blow-up guitar and pulled on a sombrero as the firm raised money for charity.

Make Some Noise help disadvantaged youngsters across the UK.

Other radio stations run by Global include Heart, Capital, Smooth, Gold and Radio X. IT MIGHT be about 17 miles from Northern Ireland but a clock on the Kintyre peninsula thinks it is in Dubai – 6000 miles away.

Campbeltown’s swaying palm trees must be having an odd effect on the town clock, which insists it is three hours ahead of UK time – the same as the United Arab Emirates city.

The installation of a new mechanism has failed to fix the problem on the west side, leaving people bemused.

Local councillor Donald Kelly said: “When it had the old mechanism in it, it would lose time.

“If you came from the north, south, east or west you would see a different time.

“Now it has had a new mechanism put in and it still isn’t working.

“It’s crazy, you can be in Dubai time, or Scottish time. We certainly don’t feel like we are in Dubai, though, the weather has been horrendous.”

Shopkeeper George McMillan was critical of efforts to fix the clock, which is on the old town hall building on Main Street.

He said: “Years ago, the burgh surveyor was ordered to find out what was wrong with it and he reported back that it was probably to do with pigeons sitting on the arms of the old clock.

“When it was a quarter past three, they would pull the arm down to the wrong time.

“This is a new clock but it’s still not right. You glance at the clock but it’s a case of guessing what time it really is.”

“A specialist sub-contractor based down south provided the new mechanisms.

“We have had electricians up the spire to correct the time on a number of occasions this year but unfortunately they have been unable to resolve the issue and the west clock face seems to have a mind of its own.” First Name
