SNP must accept Brexit

-

WHAT was most interesting about the article published under my name today, was the response from the SNP, which revealed the vacuity that lies at the heart of the party’s policy capability, due to their collective intellect having been put into the deep freeze during the present cult of personality.

Yes, as the SNP accuse, I backed a second referendum by 2021 before Brexit had happened.

Although voting Leave, like many, I expected a Remain majority, meaning nothing in the constitutional arena was likely to change.

But with the Leave result, the constitutional equation changed, with all factors now needing to be re-assessed, including the timing of the second referendum. Brexit turned a new page, and new thinking was needed.

Wisdom decreed waiting until the Brexit deal was known in detail, with time taken to assess a completely new situation.

For example, the Brexit deal will define where and under what rules an independent Scotland will trade. Until that is known, it was and is foolish to demand a second referendum. Also revealed by their response is what happens to the SNP when they put on their EU blinkers. The key issue in a referendum is the question on the ballot paper.

The Brexit one did not mention Scotland, and given the result by the people, Brexit is not “extreme” Tory policy as the SNP claim but one any government would have the duty to execute.
