Come on Scotland

Wrist protector won’t stop Andy pushing Scots towards play-offs

ANDREW ROBERTSON will have his wrist in a cast and his heart in his mouth as Scotland go for glory in Slovenia.

The Liverpool star’s arm was pounding after fearing he’d broken his hand against Slovakia.

But after fighting on to help get the win Robertson says it’ll be his heart pounding as the Scots head for Ljubljana looking to cap an incredible fightback and snare a play-off spot.

The full-back, 23, wondered if his dream was dying during the second-half push against the Slovaks.

Falling awkwardly after a tackle, Robertson instantly thought he’d broken bones as his body weight thundered on to his right hand and arm as he crashed to the deck.

Mercifully, he recovered and the pain won’t stop him in Slovenia.

Robertson said: “I’ll be okay. I’ll put a wrist protector on or I’ll just strap it up but I should be all right for Sunday.

“I landed on my arm and then I couldn’t really feel anything so I was worried a bone might be broken.

“But the doc seems quite happy with things and he doesn’t think there is anything broken.

“The gaffer came over to me because he needed everyone 100 per cent fit. He asked if I was okay and I told him to give me a minute. Luckily it eased off with the strapping on.

“I waved over to him and told him I was fine and he could make his changes accordingly. He probably thought about taking me off if I wasn’t going to be 100 per cent but it wore off and I was able to finish the game without feeling anything.

“My fingers are a bit fat and my wrist is swollen but other than that I’m okay. Hopefully everything settles down.”

Robertson’s bravery and commitment typified the whole squad against the Slovaks and Gordon Strachan’s men now board the plane for Slovenia full of determination to finish the job.

But Robertson knows the enormity of the 90 minutes ahead. He said: “It will be heart in mouth stuff but the whole nation will be behind us.

“We’ve done everything we can and now we’re right in the mix.

“It’s a kind of similar pressure to the Slovakia game. We always knew we needed six points and nobody hid away from that fact.

“It was two cup finals and we know we need to win them both. If we can perform like we have done in the last couple of games it will hopefully get us through the group.

“We’re on a good run but it’s not finished yet. Nobody can get ahead of themselves and we need to keep everybody’s feet on the ground.

“If we do that we can go into Sunday full of belief.”
