I’m able to Luke on the bright side now

- Euan McLean

LUKE DONALD is ready to get his game back on track now he’s stopped beating himself up for plummeting from world No.1 to outside the top 100.

The Englishman still managed to enjoy his day at Carnoustie yesterday despite finishing bogey, double bogey to scupper what was shaping up to be a cracking charge into contention.

Having reeled off five birdies in a row from the turn, there were flashes of the old magic that propelled him to the top of his sport five years ago.

Tough times in the seasons since have tormented the former Ryder Cup hero. But now he’s learned to go easy on himself he feels closer to getting back to his best.

Donald, nine shots back on two under, said: “It’s been frustrating but in a way my attitude and determination have been stronger and better than in the last couple of years.

“Despite bad results I feel I’m in a good place in my career and life.

“It’s maybe just an appreciation of what I’ve done and knowing if I never play great again it’s okay. There’s still a burning desire to play well but I feel fortunate in what I’ve achieved and where my life is right now.

“My girls are at a fun age. Despite some sh***y golf at times there’s a lot of good stuff.

“So I’m not so hard on myself. I’m still working just as hard and want to get back to playing in all the Majors and competing with the best players. I don’t like the results I’ve had but I’m handling it better than two years ago. It’s not bothering me so much.

“I’d be happy to walk away if I felt I was non-competitive and would never compete again. But I don’t think that’s the case.

“Reeling off five birdies at Carnoustie proves to me I’ve still got some good stuff in me. I’m not ready to do that.”
