LONELINESS is as bad for you as long-term conditions including diabetes and obesity, a top GP claims.

Professor Helen StokesLampard will today say that 1.1million lonely pensioners in the UK are more likely to develop heart disease, depression and dementia.

Those in social isolatation are 50 per cent more likely to suffer an early death.

Stokes-Lampard, of the Royal College of GPs, will tell a conference in Liverpool: “GPs see patients, many of whom are widowed, who have multiple problems like diabetes, hypertension and depression.

“But often their main problem isn’t medical they’re lonely.” A WORKER who was seriously hurt when a fatal blast ripped through a disused building has the “heart of a lion”, according to hs brother.

Courtney Clinton, 26, has been fighting for his life since the explosion a week ago.

A 23-year-old workmate died in hospital on Monday.

Ricky Clinton said on social media that brother Courtney has been “fighting like a trooper” since the accident at a former pastoral centre in Newmains, Lanarkshire.

And he encouraged people to “keep praying for him”.

Ricky described his “wee brother” as “the bravest of the brave”. He added: “Heart of a lion. Keep fighting, son. Love you so much.”

The man who died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary after the blast has not yet been named by police.

It is believed he, Courtney and two other site workers had been clearing asbestos from the building, which is owned by the Catholic Church, prior to a planned demolition when tragedy struck.

They were on site for specialist company Enviraz.

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances. The other two workers were uninjured.

Properties were evacuated after the blast following reports of a “strong smell of gas” in the area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said at the time that there was a “small explosion” which resulted in a “small fire” in the building.

Local people claim the building has been a trouble hotspot since it closed.

Councillor Robert McKendrick said: “I had regular complaints from people about easy access for young people, vandalism and fires at the centre.”
