NO SLOPING OFF.. WE CAN MAKE SNOW

Ski resort’s plan to beat weather

- CHARLIE GALL c.gall@dailyrecord.co.uk

A SKI resort are planning to make their own snow to ensure the slopes stay busy whatever the weather.

CairnGorm Mountain Limited have applied for permission for the temporary installation of a snow factory.

If successful, it will be the first time revolutionary Italian technology has been used at a ski centre in Scotland.

And it could eventually mean summer skiing.

TechnoAlpin have developed pioneering cooling technology that can produce large amounts of snow in virtually any outdoor temperature.

CairnGorm Mountain hope to trial the firm’s Snowfactory during peak season for two months from the end of November until the end of January.

If the trial is successful, the company will consider introducing the technology on a permanent basis.

Adam Gough, of CairnGorm Mountain, said: “Last season was poor in terms of snowfall.

“We simply weren’t able to open for snow sports as often as we would have liked.

“Being able to trial the Snowfactory for two months is crucial to understand whether this is a viable option for the resort in the long term.

“If successful, then we believe it will noticeably enhance the snow sports experience at CairnGorm Mountain.”

Snow is made in the Snowfactory and pumped out through a pipe.

The Snowfactory is capable of producing 45tons of snow a day which can be pumped and sprayed a distance of almost 220 yards.

The Glencoe Mountain resort also hope to have a Snowfactory in place for the winter season. They have launched a crowd-funding drive to pay for it.
