Our long goodbye to our boy helped save four people’s lives
SHAUN Woodburn’s family waited an agonising three days to say goodbye so he could save the lives of others.
Dad-of-one Shaun was a registered donor and his family honoured his wishes by allowing his organs to be used for transplant.
His dad Kevin told how the family had to endure the pain of knowing Shaun – who had given up football to focus on his family – was already gone but being kept breathing so his organs could be harvested.
As previously revealed in the Record, Shaun’s decision to be a donor saved the lives of a baby boy, a teenage girl and a man and woman in their 50s.
Kevin said: “We take some solace from the fact that Shaun’s gesture in donating his organs managed to save four lives including a young baby.”
Kevin said: “We had three days sitting with Shaun and although technically he had gone, he was still there being kept breathing artificially with tubes. It was horrific to watch our family sitting at Shaun’s bedside, heartbroken and devastated forever.
‘This is something I hope nobody reading this ever has to endure, but as Shaun was donating his organs, it was something we had to bear.”
Shaun left behind his parents and grandparents as well as his four-year-old daughter. He had played for Bonnyrigg Rose, Newtongrange Star, Whitehill Welfare and other clubs.
