GUNNERS CAN BE EURO STARS AGAIN
RICHARD COCKERILL has challenged his Edinburgh players to defy the odds yet again by proving themselves to be European competition specialists.
The Gunners coach knows a victory over London Irish at Reading today will represent a huge step towards qualification to the advanced rounds of the Challenge Cup.
But he also admitted the Scots side will have to punch above their weight when they travel over the border to take on English opposition.
Cockerill said: “The club have enjoyed decent runs in both European competitions over the past decade and have been to the final of this one.
“The opportunity to test yourselves against Premiership opposition is always welcome – because the English always rate themselves!
“London Irish might be near the foot of their league but they have had some extremely tough matches since the start of the campaign.
“They are a very strong team and a good benchmark as to where we are at the moment.
“The pool of players at clubs like them is far bigger than ours. That means the challenge for me as a coach is to make sure I pick the right guys.
“It’s vital to make a powerful start.
“A win at the Majdeski Stadium and another over Krasny Yar in Russia next weekend would be superb.
“Suddenly we would be in a strong position after two away games, with two to come at home.”
