Glasgow rally for Leanne

- ANDREW SOUTHWICK

GLASGOW CITY boss Scott Booth and striker Abbi Grant have rallied round captain Leanne Ross after her Champions League heartbreak.

The Scots champions lost the first leg of their clash with BIIK Kazygurt 3-0 and conceded an early goal at Petershill Park.

But they fought back against the Kazakhstan side to level the tie on a dramatic night.

They needed one more to avoid exiting on the away goals rule and were handed a golden chance when Katie McCabe won a penalty in 82 minutes.

But Ross saw her effort hit the post and City exited the competition at the last-32 stage for the third year running, despite a 4-1 win on the night.

Grant, who scored a hat-trick on a bittersweet evening, said: “Leanne is really disappointed. She’s given a lot to this club and this club means a lot to her.

“The way that it happened I’m just sad.”

Booth added: “You can miss penalties and there’s a lot of pressure on it.

“Leanne’s a top-class pro and she’s given so much to this club. There’s lots of other nights where she’s helped pull the club through.”

City will be hoping tomorrow’s game with Celtic can help pick them up as they close in on a league and cup double.

Hibs stand in their way. The Easter Road side travel to Aberdeen with Chris Roberts taking charge for the final time before he leaves to take up a role at Bristol City.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, secondbottom Hamilton continue their relegation fight against Stirling University.

And Rangers face Spartans in Edinburgh with third place still up for grabs.

In SWPL 2 Forfar Farmington can clinch promotion if they beat Motherwell.
