90 MINUTE MALKY

Mackay to boss Scots for one game only reveals Regan

- EUAN McLEAN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

STEWART REGAN says Malky Mackay will be Scotland boss for one match only - because he already has an even bigger job on his hands trying to fix our broken game.

The SFA chief executive warned it could take until as long as next

From Back Page summer before a permanent replacement for axed Gordon Strachan is confirmed.

That suggests Regan could already have his eye on a candidate who is currently in work with a national team still in the frame for the World Cup.

Mackay will take the team for a friendly against Holland at Pittodrie on November 9.

But when asked if the former Cardiff boss could do both jobs Regan said: “It’s not something that has been contemplated.

“The performance role is a very big job and there are some big challenges we want Malky to deal with and put in place, so it is not something we would entertain. We’ve asked him to do this as a one-off and he has agreed.

“It’s too early to comment about individual candidates but Malky has been very clear that he is stepping aside from his day job for a couple of weeks in the run-up to that game.

“A longer-term interest in the manager’s job has not been part of the discussion.”

Regan insists the SFA board will consider all options, including a foreign coach, and says they won’t be rushed into a decision with no competitive match until September.

He added: “We will take our time. We want to get somebody in before we start thinking about the competitive matches, which don’t happen until September 2018, starting with the new Nations League.

“We may have a couple of friendlies in March and June of 2018 and we might have a new manager in place for those friendlies, but if we haven’t it’s not the end of the world.

“It would be my preference to try to do it sooner than that but there’s a degree of flexibility given the way the fixtures are panning out that perhaps we wouldn’t have had in previous years.”
