POLICE yesterday searched a canal yards from the home of a supermarket employee who failed to turn up at her work.

Fears were growing for Asda checkout worker Karen Brown, 47, who left home without her handbag, purse and mobile phone.

Her husband Jock left several frantic messages on social media pleading for anyone with information to contact police.

Neighbours of the couple on Kirkwood Avenue, Clydebank, said Karen had gone to work at 7am despite her shift not starting until 10am.

Jock, 48, only reported something was amiss after Karen failed to return home from the supermarket on Saturday.

The former Royal Navy serviceman issued an appeal on Sunday on social media, which was shared by people in Clydebank.

One neighbour said she had been upset after a row with a customer.

Another said: “She is a very quiet woman but friendly with it.

“She and Jock had been to New York recently and they had become grandparents, so they’ve been having really good times.”

Police officers carried out a fingertip search of a milelong stretch of Forth and the Clyde Canal between Karen’s home and her work, which would have involved her taking a longer route than her usual walk down Kirkwood Avenue and Livingstone Street.

On Facebook, Esther Mowatt said: “She works in Asda. Poor woman always so helpful when she’s at the checkout.”

Jock’s original message appealed for vigilance among local people. He wrote on Facebook: “Friends, Karen Brown is missing.

“If anyone has seen or spoken to her please PM me urgently. The family are all worried. She has never done this before. Please share.”

Karen is 5ft 6in, of medium build, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Sergeant Andy Barron, of Police Scotland, said: “It is not like her to leave without saying goodbye and she left without her handbag, purse and mobile phone which, again, is very unusual.

“She was due at her work in the morning but when her husband went to collect her at about 8pm, he was told she did not come into work and had not called them to say she would not be in.

“This is out of character for Karen.”

He added: “Her family are worried and want her to come home.”
