400K Mercs recalled

Range of models affected by airbag problem

MERCEDES-BENZ are recalling about 400,000 cars in Britain to fix a problem that causes airbags to inflate accidentally.

The German car makers said the issue affects certain A, B, C and E-Class vehicles, as well as CLA, GLA and GLC models, built between November 2011 and July this year.

They added the cars are safe to drive under normal conditions – but if the driver airbag warning light comes on, owners should call roadside assistance or contact their nearest dealer.

Mercedes said there have been no instances of airbags prematurely deploying in the UK, although there have been 30 cases worldwide, including in Germany and the US.

There were no fatalities or serious injuries during these incidents, the company added.

The problem involves a clock spring in the steering column.

A Mercedes spokesman said the issue only affected certain vehicles in “rare circumstances”.

He added:“If the steering column module clock spring is broken and the wiring components are not sufficiently earthed, this could lead to an electrostatic discharge, which could inadvertently deploy the driver’s airbag.”

The recall will allow Mercedes dealers to replace the clock springs.

The work is performed free of charge and takes an hour to complete.

The company said they would contact all customers whose cars might be affected.
