Keep your Hed this time Celts

It’ll be brawl right if we hit ‘em back

- GAVIN BERRY

CELTIC paid the price after a rush of blood to the Hedman when they last travelled to Munich.

And Neil Lennon hopes the Hoops don’t return from Germany with any regrets on their return.

Lennon was part of Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side who blew a Champions League lead against Bayern 14 years ago.

Alan Thompson headed them in front – only for Dutch ace Roy Makaay to net a double.

But the £18million man was given a helping hand by cock-up keeper Magnus Hedman who blundered for Makaay’s late winner.

Lennon admitted it was the one that got away and he’s convinced Celtic, who held the German giants to a scoreless draw in Glasgow, were good enough to progress the season after they reached the UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

Makaay was the main man back in 2003 and this time it’s Robert Lewandowski who Lennon rates as better than Edinson Cavani who ran riot at Parkhead in PSG’s 5-0 win last month.

Brendan Rodgers and his side recovered from that rout to win at Anderlecht and Lennon reckons they are capable of getting something from the Allianz Arena tomorrow night.

The Hibs boss, whose side face Celtic in the Betfred Cup semi-final on Saturday, recalled the JOHN CLARK hopes Celtic can land a blow on Bayern – after recalling the punch that sparked a brawl against the German side 51 years ago.

Bobby Lennox and Joe McBride had scored as Celtic fought back to 2-2 in a friendly in San Francisco in 1966.

Lisbon Lion Clark said: “Stevie Chalmers got hooked by their full-back Adolf Kunstwadl. Stevie night when O’Neill described the dressing room as a “morgue” and said: “We played well. It was 0-0 until just before the hour then Thompson scored a diving header against Oliver Kahn.

“We were in control of the game. Then Makaay scored with a volley after 73 minutes – but we were still comfortable we’d see the game out at 1-1.

“Magnus then may or may not have misjudged the flight of a cross with four minutes remaining.

“It’s one of those where people run across, don’t get a touch on it and it ends up in the far corner. It was Makaay again.

“This time it’s going to be a real test for Celtic.

“The change of manager has given Bayern a real lift.

“Bayern have evolved over the years since I played them. They won the tournament in 2013 under Juup Heynckes who is back in charge.

“Pep Guardiola then took them to another level during his reign.

“Lewandowski is an all-round top striker. He’s different from Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at PSG but better than Cavani.” chased him right along the touchline. It ended up a bit of a free for all.

“It was quite comical, players were running after them and the fans were running at the back of us!”

Clark hopes the Hoops put up a fight in tomorrow night’s clash in the Allianz Arena and added: “As long as you’ve got a goalscorer you’ve got a chance – and Celtic have that in Leigh Griffiths.”
