SFA set to move for their man

From Back Page after their goalless second leg with Switzerland in Basel.

The failure to make Russia next summer has now opened the door for SFA chief Stewart Regan to make the next definitive move in the quest to find Gordon Strachan’s long-term successor.

Record Sport understands O’Neill’s work in taking Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 and coming close to repeating the trick in the World Cup campaign has made him a prime candidate for Scotland.

He signed an extension with the Irish FA which is due to take him through to the end of the Euro 2020 campaign.

Irish chiefs would demand compensation but it would not reach the £750,000 figure which is the release trigger for English Premier League clubs.

An approach will be made to O’Neill’s bosses to test their resolve but he refused to discuss any Scottish interest or future plans last night.

O’Neill said: “I haven’t even considered that. I am under contract until 2020 so tonight is about spending time with my

players.”
