A SMILING Shaun Woodburn looks forward to the New Year on a party night out – a year he would not live to see.

Within hours of this heartbreaking footage being filmed, dad-of-one Shaun lay dying on the street.

The video captures Shaun in party mood, singing to The Proclaimers’ Hibs anthem Sunshine on Leith.

The 30-year-old former junior footballer also shared a selfie in which he sported 2017 glasses as he celebrated Hogmanay with friends in Gladstones Bar, Leith.

And in other images he’s posing happily with friends, including Hibs midfielder Danny Swanson, as they enjoy the party atmosphere.

Just a short time later, he was fatally injured by a teenage thug who had been attacking strangers on a violent rampage through the streets of Edinburgh.

Shaun died in hospital of brain injuries.

The images of his final hours, which we’re using with the permission of his family, emerged as his dad Kevin received a response from the Scottish Government to his complaint about the killer’s soft sentence.

The 17-year-old was given four years’ detention after being convicted of culpable homicide.

But the thug, who can’t be named because of his age, could be out in just two years.

Kevin said: “The photos show my son enjoying a night out like millions of other people were doing that night.

“He was in the company of friends and was happy, relaxed and looking forward to the year ahead.

“I haven’t watched the video yet as I can’t bring myself to look at it just now but I wanted people to see Shaun at his happiest.

“A normal young man enjoying a night out with friends before it ended in tragedy.”

The killer was part of a group who assaulted random strangers celebrating New Year’s Eve in the capital.

They then became involved in a brawl outside Gladstones which led to Shaun’s fatal injuries.
