Lawyers to meet dad Kevin

- JANE HAMILTON j.hamilton@dailyrecord.co.uk

PROSECUTORS bowed to public pressure yesterday and offered to meet Shaun Woodburn’s family.

It came after more than 70,000 people signed a petition protesting against his killer’s sentence.

It is understood the Crown Office say they are prepared to listen to the family’s views on the four-year sentence handed down to 30-year-old Shaun’s killer.

Law chiefs are still deciding whether to appeal against the sentence as being “unduly lenient”.

But the offer of a meeting was cautiously welcomed by Shaun’s dad Kevin.

He said: “It’s a step in the right direction and I’m pleased they have reached out following the campaign for justice for Shaun. They cannot discuss the sentence as it’s under review but will listen to our views on it.”

Kevin launched his campaign to win justice for his son following the sentencing last week, writing to Lord Advocate James Wolffe and Scottish Government ministers.

He said: “I’m humbled by the public support. It has truly been overwhelming and a huge comfort.

“We have received hundreds of messages from people offering whatever help and support they can give.”

He added: “I will speak to the prosecutors and hopefully they will listen. I will keep fighting for my son and ensure he gets the justice he deserves.”

Kevin said he was disappointed with a “generic” response from the Scottish Government, acknowledging receipt of his letter to Justice Secretary Michael Matheson.
