As the number of youngsters in care continues to rise, more people are being asked to consider taking up the role.

Jackie is now encouraging more people to open their homes and hearts to youngsters in need.

She said: “We do the job of a mum and dad and love them for who they are.

“I don’t judge the parents. They may have different backgrounds and needs as well. It’s about being supportive and acknowledging them.

“When we began fostering, I expected to have lots of children coming through my door but Liam was the one who really needed our support most.

“When I see the difference in him, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“One of the things that helped at the start was my sense of humour. I would find a way to turn around any situation so that we could laugh about it.

“It helped massively and brought Liam out of his shell. Every child is different and you are constantly learning.

“It’s given me a bit more of an understanding of people and a real sense of fulfilment.

“I have been privileged enough to share my life with Liam who is building a life where he can really feel proud of himself.”

Often if a suitable placement cannot be found, children can end up being shunted between foster carers who specialise in short-term or respite care, or between children’s homes, or moved to an area where there are vacancies.

For older children, this often means a change of school and the trauma of being parted from friends and family.

Jackie added: “Being a foster parent is about being there to offer love and support when no one else can.

“You set out to make a difference to young people’s lives and you end up learning so much from them.

“Even making a small difference to a child’s life can be so rewarding. It’s a very humbling job.”
