Earnings honesty is vital if your love is to last

- ANNA BURNSIDE

ALMOST half of British couples do not know how much their other half earns.

It’s such an awkward subject that seven per cent Google their partner’s job rather than asking them a direct question.

Pensions company Portafina found that one in 10 people had outgoings their partner didn’t know about, 18 per cent had secret debt and 11 per cent had a sneaky gambling habit.

That’s no way to start a partnership. However awkward it may be, honesty is the best policy.

Rhian Westbury said: “My partner has quite a bit of credit card debt which we spoke about at the start of our relationship.

“We’ve put off moving in together and I’ve helped him sort out a payment plan.

“This way he can clear his debt and improve his credit rating, so when we are ready to buy our house, we should hopefully get a good mortgage.”

Jamie Smith-Thompson, managing director at Portafina, said: “Whether you’re just getting serious, moving in together or getting married, working on financial issues as a team will allow you to support each other through any hiccups.

“Having regular transparent discussions is key to financial success as a long-term couple, and being open with each other will help create the future you both desire.”
