County Eagles landed

- ALASDAIR FRASER

FORMER Manchester United winger Chris Eagles could become Owen Coyle’s first signing for Ross County.

The Englishman is a free agent after leaving Port Vale in the summer but will be put through his paces as a trialist in Dingwall this week.

The Staggies face competition from several English lower league clubs, including the Valiants, who have offered Eagles a short-term deal to return.

But the 31-year-old is said to be keen to test himself in Scotland and be reunited with former boss Coyle after enjoying the best spells of his career under him at Burnley and Bolton.

County boss Coyle will run the rule over Eagles before deciding whether to offer him a contract after Saturday’s televised tussle with Celtic.

He said: “Chris has come in to train with us this week. It’s a chance for us to look at him and assess where he is fitness-wise.

“He’s still a free agent but he’s been offered a couple of things down in England.

“I think Port Vale are desperate to get him back, while Oldham and a few others were keen on him. We will look at it and see where it goes from there.”

Coyle knows his men will have to be at their very best against Celtic but insists they can pull off a shock.

He said: “This is a tough place to get a win. If we are at our very best and Celtic are at their very best then they will win.

“But if we are at our very best and they are not, we have a chance. You can get a result in difficult games.”
