Morten: Lambert Scot to be in frame

MORTEN WIEGHORST insists his old Celtic team-mate Paul Lambert is the man to lead Scotland out the football wilderness.

The Dane reckons that Lambert is the perfect choice to fill Gordon Strachan’s shoes as national boss.

And Wieghorst, who once helped his own country at the Euro finals as Denmark’s No.2, feels Lambert could end the Scots’ long tournament exile if he is given the top job by the SFA.

Lambert is out of work after quitting Wolves last May but Wieghorst believes the former Scotland captain has a hunger to win that few can match.

The ex-Dundee and Hoops star said: “Paul was a great player at Celtic because he built on everything he learned in Germany.

“He understood the game and when Celtic signed him from Dortmund, you could see the technical quality right away.

“But the thing that struck me most about Paul was that he had that Scottish passion.

“He never wanted to be beaten, even in training.”

Wieghorst had 10 years in Scottish football, as a playmaker at Dundee and Celtic, before Michael Laudrup brought him back home in 2002 to Brondby.

Since then, Morten has built an impressive coaching CV, winning two Danish Cups with Nordsjaelland which saw him poached by the Danish FA in 2011 to run the Under-21 side.

He was also Denmark manager Morten Olsen’s No.2 at Euro 2012.

Wieghorst has watched Lambert’s own managerial stock in England fall since the Scot took Norwich into the top flight with a painful sacking at Aston Villa in 2015 and short stays at Blackburn and Wolves.

But he said: “If Paul could take Scotland to Euro 2020, he would be a national hero.”
