Back our yards
I’M SURE that everyone was sad to hear BIFAB offshore fabrication yard in Burntisland is on the verge of calling in the administrators.
Having listened to Barry Smith from the GMB union, it would seem SSE’s Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Project (BOWL) – despite having received Government subsidies – has utilised overseas yards for a large portion of the fabrication scope.
The Scottish Government have invested millions of taxpayers’ money into Scottish fabrication yards. However, North Sea decommissioning and offshore windfarm fabrication contracts are going overseas while two of these yards (Nigg & Kishorn) lie empty.
Is it wrong to expect that contracts from taxpayersubsidised projects be awarded to businesses which have received public investment to carry out such contracts? Sandra Skinner, by email
Thought for posties
WITH the festive rush fast approaching, readers should spare a thought for their posties who are delivering so much additional Christmas mail, including catalogues for stores, for which Royal Mail take payment.
The weight of this on top of their everyday mail is a lot more but our postmen (and women) don’t get paid extra for it.
Don’t forget to show your appreciation for the hard work they’ll all be doing this Christmas.
