Scottish Labour’s health spokesman Anas Sarwar MSP said: “The SNP’s response to consistent­ly failing to meet patients standards was to set up a review in an attempt to scrap them.

“Shona Robison needs to recognise resource isn’t meeting demand and that her workforce crisis is what is causing patients and staff to be failed. The SNP must wake up and tackle the staffing crisis in our health service if patients are going to receive the treatment they deserve.

“Labour have been clear throughout this process that targets for cancer treatments, young people’s mental health waiting times and A&E and other key services must be maintained and improved upon.

“We will continue to press the SNP to guarantee their future.”

Tory health spokesman Miles Briggs said: “This report accurately identifies that the system of targets has not improved health outcomes enough.

“This report is welcome and we clearly need to change the target culture in our NHS.”
