A DOGGY dancing team raised the woof for Scotland in a unique competition.

The Scottish squad – made up of five dogs and three handlers – competed at the Open European Championships (OEC) in Belgium.

Doggy dancing combines obedience training, tricks and dance with interaction between dogs and owners.

Marie Docherty, 53, from East Kilbride, and fourlegged friend Erin travelled to Europe with their team-mates from the Elite K9 Dancers squad. It was the first time a team from Scotland had competed at the championships.

Marie said: “Team Scotland were very proud to fly the flag at the opening ceremony where we were among around 16 nations.

“It was a really emotional experience and my mum Mary Docherty was persuaded to be our team mascot and joined us in our parade for Scotland.

“The first night was memorable as all the nationalities came together for dinner, where we all exchanged gifts from our own countries.

“Tunnock’s teacakes, Walkers shortbread and Highland toffee were some of the goodies we handed out.

“It was then on to the competition and I was so proud of Erin and the team. For Scotland to be semi-finalists was amazing.”

The Scottish team are delighted to have been asked to take part in next year’s finals.

Marie added: “Being asked to go to Switzerland next year is a real honour. And I would love to make the team again.”
