ON A BUDGET
A new book gives you tips and secrets to ensure you get the Duchess of Cambridge look with a mix of high street picks and other items that don’t cost the Earth
SHE is one of the world’s most photographed women – with barely an eyelash out of place. Yet to get the Duchess of Cambridge’s flawless make-up, you don’t have to break the bank.
While she does have the odd French cosmetic in her bathroom cabinet, she also turns to High Street moisturisers.
And, like many of us, she hides her dark circles with the fashion stylists’ favourite concealer Touche Eclat.
Kate’s beauty regime is surprisingly cheap AND low maintenance. She even applies her slap herself. Claudia Joseph, who has written a book about the Duchess of Cambridge’s style secrets, takes us inside the royal make-up bag. Natural Glow: Nivea Pure & Natural Moisturising Day Cream And Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream You can’t take the girl out of the high street – even Kate mixes an expensive moisturiser with a cheaper face cream. And there is no better bargain than Nivea’s Pure & Natural range, free from parabens, silicones, colourants and mineral oils.
Joan Collins and Victoria Beckham are fans, and the Duchess has two tubs – Nivea’s £5.10 Pure & Natural Moisturising Day Cream and its £10.20 Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream. She was spotted buying the moisturisers at Boots in London. Certainly the aloe vera and argan oil help her English rose complexion. Flawless Skin: Lancome Hydra Zen Anti-Stress Moisturising Cream And Genifique Serum The secret of Kate’s great skin lies across the Channel at Lancome. Apparently, Kate swears by their £39.50 Hydra Zen Anti-Stress Moisturising Cream and £59 Genifique Serum. She has long been a fan of the moisturiser – enriched with naturally-derived plant extracts with an SPF 15 – while she carries a bottle of Genifique in her make-up bag to revive her skin after late nights and long-haul flights. Magic Make-Up: Bobbi Brown If you want to look as good as Kate, follow in her footsteps and have a make-up lesson in the beauty department with Bobbi Brown.
Kate was a regular visitor to a Bobbi Brown counter before her wedding and was spotted on a stool being shown how to fill in her brows (apparently she uses a £35 Dark Brown Brow Kit).
She also invested in a three-step anti-wrinkle set, which includes a £28 eye cream, an £18 corrector and tinted eye brightener for £23.50.
After the wedding, the firm revealed one of their staff had “provided make-up artistry assistance to members of the bridal party” with a list of products to recreate Kate’s look – £16.50 Eye Shadows in Ivory, Rock Star and Slate, £18 Pale Pink Blusher, £32 Pink Quartz Shimmer Brick, £18 Sandwash Pink Lipstick and £15 lip liner, as well as a £14 Crystal Gloss.
And don’t forget their £30 Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation for a dewy base and £40 Brightening Finishing Powder, an iridescent powder in shades of taupe and rose, to give a glorious pearl shimmer. Luscious Lashes: Lancome Kate also turns to Lancome for the final touches of her make-up – heavy eyeliner, smoky eyes and long lashes.
She loves their non-smudge £23 Artliner and £24.50 Hypnose Mascara, a foam-tipped liquid liner, from Peter Jones. Lancome’s head of elite team Shehla Shaikh said of the Duchess of Cambridge: “The eyes are smudged softly with a charcoal shadow to add softness. Then the top and bottom lash lines are defined with a liquid liner and several coats of black mascara.
Freshness is added with a rose pink blush on the apple of the cheeks and matching lips to balance the whole look.” Beauty Secrets: Eclat No make-up bag is complete without YSL’s £25 Touche Eclat. Like models, actresses and pop stars, the Duchess has a YSL miracle click-pen concealer in her handbag. Finishing Touches: Illuminum Scent When Kate wanted a scent for the Royal Wedding, she turned to Illuminum perfumier Michael Boadi, who created her favourite White Gardenia Petals fragrance.
Illuminum describe the £125 scent – which has base notes of Precious Woods, middle notes of Gardenia, Ylang Ylang and Jasmine, and top notes of Bergamot, Cassis and Lily – as delicate and refined. How to Dress Like a Princess: The Secrets of Kate’s Wardrobe is published by Splendid Publications, £12.99 YSL Touche
