Scotland looks stunning in the snow but, oh deer, it’s absolutely freezing
A BIG freeze gripped mainland Scotland yesterday as temperatures plummeted to a bone-chilling low of nearly -12C.
Ice and snow created problems for planes, trains and automobiles as flights were grounded, schools closed and vehicles skidded off roads. But some parts of the country were treated to stunning scenes straight from the front of a Christmas card.
The village of Dalwhinnie in Inverness-shire was the place for a duvet day as temperatures fell to -11.3C.
In Glasgow, it was a freezing -8C overnight, the coldest night since 2010.
But in the Western Isles, they were basking in a relatively balmy 6C as they escaped the heaviest snowfalls with the warmest weather in the UK.
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice in the north and east, where roads were open but drivers were warned to be take care.
Dozens of flights were cancelled from all mainland airports as snow and freezing conditions south of the border had a knock-on effect.
In Aberdeenshire and the Highlands, schools and nurseries were closed or partially closed due to the wintry blast. Snow has continued to batter the Highlands, with temperatures dropping as low as -11C.
A broken-down train brought Glasgow routes to a standstill.
Services between Glasgow and Paisley were affected, with journeys to stops including Lanark and Motherwell cancelled.
