MySaints victimsof ourtop-6 success

TOMMY WRIGHT believes his St Johnstone side have become victims of their own top-six success.

Under the Northern Irishman the Perth club have been top-half Premiership regulars but a run of poor results – turned recently with back-to-back away wins at Hibs and Hamilton – have seen Saints slip down into the bottom six.

Wright said: “I always sense there’s an air of negativity about the place but not among the players and staff. My job is to remain positive.

“I would like more points and to be playing well more consistently. But the league is stronger this year and we’re only two points worse off than the same stage last season.

“Yes, we can be better but aren’t as bad as some people are making out.

“It’s a lot tougher this season but we still have a lot to be positive about. We’re only 16 games in.

“Look at what’s happening at Partick. They were superb last season, making the top six. That shows you how well the players at this club have done season after season.

“We’ve been top six for six years. That’s great for a club of our size without blowing the budget at any time to keep us there.

“Maybe we’re victims of our past success with our own support rather than the media who recognise how well we’ve done here.

“But the expectation levels go up every year with our fans. And I’m confident we’ll still give them another good season.”
