Honour for murdered hero of raid
Tribute to brave James..44 years on
A HERO railwayman killed trying to stop armed robbers more than 40 years ago was honoured yesterday.
James Kennedy, 43, died in hospital after he was shot by the gang in the £10,000 raid on the former St Rollox British Rail works in Glasgow on December 21, 1973.
The dad of three, from Bearsden near Glasgow, was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his brave efforts to stop the robbers escaping.
And yesterday, Glasgow’s Lord Provost Eva Bolander unveiled a plaque in his honour at the scene of the shooting in Springburn.
She said: “It’s a privilege to honour the bravery of James Kennedy almost half a century since he tragically lost his life.
“It’s important his story of heroism is heard and remembered for posterity.”
Daughter Elspeth, who was just six when her father was killed, said: “I’m extremely proud of my dad. He died a hero.
“I’m delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate that bravery. His life counts and his courage is inspiring.
“My dad went to work that day and never came home. Christmas time always brings back memories of my dad.”
She was joined at the ceremony by sisters Shona and Leila.
Seven men were jailed for their part in the murder and robbery.
