YOU had better Believe it, Cher is one of the stars of the new Mamma Mia! movie.

The 71-year-old singer is the mother of Meryl Streep’s character Donna in the prequel. Cher is the surprise star of the trailer out yesterday for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, making an entrance on a helicopter. Her character Ruby Sheridan says: “Let’s get the party started,” to which Amanda Seyfried, reprising her role as Sophie, says: “Grandma, you weren’t invited.” Ruby quips: “That’s the best kind of party, little girl.” The trailer also features Downton Abbey’s Lily James as a young Donna alongside stars of the 2008 film – Streep, Seyfried, Julie Walters and Colin Firth.

But fans are left wondering if Donna could be dead, as the twoand-a-half-minute trailer refers to the character in the past tense.

As flashback images of Streep appear, Walters tells Seyfried: “Your mother was the bravest person we ever met.” It is unclear whether any of Streep’s scenes are new.

Bosses say the film, due out in July, “goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present”.

Walters returns as Rosie and Christine Baranski as Tanya in the musical comedy, set on a Greek island and based on Abba songs. Seyfried reunites with Dominic Cooper as Sky, and Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgard are also on screen again.

Alexa Davies joins the cast as young Rosie, Jessica Keenan Wynn as young Tanya, while Jeremy Irvine is the young version of Brosnan, Josh Dylan is in Skarsgard’s role and Hugh Skinner is a younger Firth.

The trailer features I Have A Dream, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia and ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus return in charge of the music.

Earlier this year, Andersson said the film would feature Angel Eyes, I Wonder and When I Kissed The Teacher.

Mamma Mia! took £450million worldwide.
