Smoke was seeping into top floor as he alerted the residents

A MUSIC teacher yesterday described how he helped rescue six students as fire swept through a building.

Chris Hamilton, 29, spotted the blaze in Murray Place, Stirling, as he walked by on Friday evening.

He was concerned that the blaze above a barber’s shop may have spread to a block next door.

So he went inside and managed to alert six students who were occupying four of the flats.

Chris said he found two of the students in a top-floor flat where smoke was already beginning to seep through the walls.

He led the six out of the building and helped rescue their personal belongings including guitars.

Chris, from Sauchie, Clackmannanshire, added: ”There were about 100 people standing outside looking at the main blaze and the fire brigade had not arrived yet.

“I asked if anybody had alerted people in the adjoining building but no one seemed to know.

“I went inside and started shouting and banging on doors to see if anyone was inside.

“There was already smoke in the top-floor flat closest to the blaze. They did not realise there was a fire next door.

“I got them out and told one of the firefighters who went inside to make sure there was no one else there.”

About 40 firefighters tackled the blaze and stopped it spreading.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “There were no injuries.

“Crews remained on scene overnight to make the area safe.”
