Stars including Angelina Jolie and Allison Janney turned the red carpet black for the Time’s Up campaign .. while royal protocol saw the Duchess of Cambridge wear green

GARY Oldman last night scored a Bafta win for his portrayal of Winston Churchill – putting him on course for an Oscar. The British star has already picked up a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for Darkest Hour. Accepting his best actor award, he thanked his three sons and his “beautiful wife” Gisele for their support. He also thanked Sir Winston Churchill who, he said, “held the line for honour, for integrity and freedom, for his nation”. The biggest winner of the night was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, which won five awards, including best film and best actress for Frances McDormand. McDormand, who plays a mother trying to solve the mystery of her daughter’s rape and murder, chose not to follow the black dress code of the Time’s Up movement against showbiz sex abusers.

She said: “I have a little trouble with compliance.” After the audience cheered, she added: “But I want you to know I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black.”

Best supporting actress went to former West Wing star Allison Janney for I, Tonya, the story of shamed figure skater Tonya Harding.

She said she was hit with a “wave of emotion and joy and pride” but she also joked about being awed by royal guests William and Kate.

She said: “Having Kate and William in the front row, I wanted to say something to them, but you don’t call them Kate and William so I just decided to look at them.”

Referring to Kate’s decision not to wear black, she said: “She’s an extraordinary woman and she can wear whatever she wants”

Guillermo del Toro was named best director for The Shape of Water, while Daniel Kaluuya won EE Rising Star for horror film Get Out. One of the biggest cheers of the night went to Blade Runner and Gladiator director Sir Ridley Scott as he was presented with the Fellowship award. In his speech, the director praised the work of “storytellers” such as Sir David Attenborough, and delivered a strong environmental message. He said: “The best example of storytellers’ power is Blue Planet, probably the greatest commercial for our beautiful planet. We must not lose this beautiful gift we have, it’s the only one we’ve got left.” The awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall were hosted by Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley, who had the audience in stitches with her jokes. She also spoke of the “powerful Time’s Up movement”.
