Spy smears put Corbyn at risk, say Labour

- ANDREW WOODCOCK reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

JEREMY Corbyn may have been put in danger by smears about alleged links with a Czech spy, it was claimed yesterday.

A spokesman for the Labour leader pointed out that the Finsbury Park mosque killer Darren Osborne had said Corbyn was his intended target because of his supposed support for terrorism.

He added: “The constant repetition … portraying Jeremy Corbyn as a terrorist sympathiser – which is entirely false – has dangers to it which have been quite clearly demonstrated.

“There needs to be an awareness of the dangers of using that kind of language.”

The comment came after Corbyn accused newspapers of spreading “lies and smears” about his alleged links with a Czech agent in the 80s.

His lawyers have written to Tory vice-chairman Ben Bradley threatening court action unless he apologises over a tweet linking the Labour leader with communist spies.

The letter also calls on the Mansfield MP to pay Corbyn’s legal costs, make a donation to charity in lieu of damages and provide a written undertaking not to repeat his “highly defamatory” statement.

Theresa May sought to make capital out of the situation in the Commons, saying of Corbyn: “I know he likes Czechs.”

But the Labour leader only reacted by appearing to feign a yawn.
