No time to draw breath in Sons safety bid

-

BOSS Stephen Aitken hopes Dumbarton can spark a late push for safety by righting a wrong against Queen of the South today.

Back in November Aitken’s men looked set to secure a win over the Doonhamers before a late Stuart Carswell own goal saw the Dumfries men salvage a 2-2 draw.

It was the second game running Dumbarton had dropped points from a winning position after another 2-2 stalemate at Dunfermline just three days before.

And with his side sitting in the relegation play-off slot – nine points adrift of safety – the Sons boss knows victory is vital today.

Aitken said: “We should have won the last game at our place and hopefully we can put that right.

“We were 2-1 up with only a couple of minutes to go but lost an own goal from a corner. It was harsh on the players but they have the chance to make up for that.

“Queens can still make the top four and we can still catch Falkirk so there is plenty to play for.”

Dumfries boss Gary Naysmith is braced for a battle on a pitch that has taken a battering from the elements in recent weeks.

He said: “This will be a very different match as Dumbarton’s pitch is going to be really heavy.

“Both teams like to play football and use the pace of their attackminded players but this game is going to be a battle and we will need to dig in to get the win.”
