McGinn: I can’t wait for us to be brothers in arms

- LINDSAY HERRON

PAUL McGINN is dreaming of playing against brother Stephen for the first time next season – as long as it’s in the Premiership.

Paul is fighting to stay in the top flight with Partick Thistle while Stephen is odds on to get there with St Mirren eight points ahead in the Championship.

Then there could be the scenario of three McGinns playing for three different sides in the Premiership.

But the Thistle full-back reckons the youngster of the family, Hibs star John, will be heading to a higher level in the summer.

McGinn said: “I would love to play against my brother next season. I have played with Stephen but never against him, while I have played against John.

“Livi are chasing St Mirren but they are looking good. I certainly don’t want to pass him on the way down – and that’s not even been considered.

“It would be interesting if there are three brothers playing for different teams in the Premiership next season but I don’t think John will be there. I can’t see him going anywhere else but the top.

“Stephen psyched John out in the last game of last season. Hibs were already champions but St Mirren needed a point to ensure they weren’t in the play-offs.

“I remember Neil Lennon pulled John aside and asked if he was alright to play and he said of course.

“But it must have been hard, he knew livelihoods were at stake at St Mirren.

“Stephen can be pretty ruthless – John’s nicer! So I know what’s coming my way next season. He won’t be getting one over me.”

Second-bottom Thistle face Aberdeen at Firhill today. The Dons have lost their last two league matches but McGinn knows they still have loads of quality, not least his old St Mirren teammate Kenny McLean.

He tips the midfielder to join his brother John in making the next step in his career and added: “You see players like James McArthur still doing really well and Kenny could do the same.”
