- I can’t thank Darren enough for what he’s done for our family

one I never expected. I’m thrilled to be put forward for the award.

“I still hear from some of the people I helped to save and they sent me a lovely thank-you card.

“It was really just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I only did what anyone else would have.”

Carolann McClintock was rescued from the fire in January along with husband Paul and children Callum, 12 and seven-year-old Connor.

She said: “Darren is a real hero. He woke us up by banging at the door and helped to get us out before it was too late. If it wasn’t for his brave actions, we wouldn’t be here today.

“I can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for our family.”

Darren’s kids Sophie, 17, and Kieran, 11, are proud of their dad.

He added: “They slept through the whole thing and seeing them afterwards made me realise how precious life is.

“I’m glad I could help but it was just a case of doing what I could.”

Jem Maidment, director of marketing and communications at Utilita Energy, said: “Utilita is immensely proud and honoured to be the title sponsor of this fantastic event for the second year running.

“It shines a light on Scotland’s unsung heroes – every story we heard last year was inspirational, every single one deserved all the recognition, praise and gratitude they received.

“We look forward to hearing even more inspiring stories from communities across the country in the coming months.”

As always, it’s the ordinary people with their amazing stories who are the real stars of the awards and we want you to tell us about all those you think deserve recognition. It could be a hero doctor, a nurse, or a cheery bus driver – just someone who makes a real difference.

We also want to know about Scots who have shown unusual courage. They might be in the Armed Forces or the emergency services, they could be your home help or hairdresser – as long as they are a hero to you, we want to know about them.

The 2018 Daily Record Our Heroes awards ceremony will take place at the Doubletree by Hilton, Glasgow Central, on May 18.
