Go fourth and multi fly

Eckersley has already had three promotions but winning with his Buddies would be best yet

ADAM ECKERSLEY is no stranger to a promotion party.

But the Buddies full-back admits there would be something sweet about celebrating with St Mirren.

The defender is looking to seal the Championship at Tannadice tonight – and claim the fourth promotion of his career.

Eckersley helped Horsens reach the Danish top flight in 2009-10 then repeated the trick to fire Aarhus back to the Superliga the following season.

The 32-year-old was a Tynecastle hero after Hearts blasted their way out of the Championship three years ago. But he admits sending the Saints soaring to the top tier might top the lot.

Jack Ross’s men only need a point at Dundee United tonight and Eckersley said: “Maybe I’m a good omen.

“It’s not a bad thing to have on your CV.

“The Hearts one was special because of the manner we did it but this one is special in a different way because of where we’ve come from. When I signed in January last year we were heading to League One. The club had been completely written off.

“The manager and the lads in the dressing room knew we could string results together and have a go at it this season. We’ve kept rolling on and it will be brilliant to get there.

“In Denmark the celebrations are pretty much the same as here – everyone goes mad for days!

“I won promotion with Horsens then moved to Aarhus, who were the third biggest club in the country but had suffered relegation. It was great to help get them straight back up.

“All the clubs I’ve been at who were promoted probably felt they should have been playing at the top level. It adds a bit of pressure and expectation but I thrive on that pressure.”

Saints thought they had the title in the bag at the weekend when more than 2000 Paisley punters invaded Brechin.

Livingston put the celebrations on hold but it’s all in Saints’ hands tonight. Eckersley said: “There will be another big travelling support and it would be brilliant if we could win it there.

“United have a lot to play for too but we have belief we can get the three points let alone the one we need.”
