CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

-

ANDY ROBERTSON admits Liverpool’s charge into the Champions League semis is his career high – exactly five years after playing in League Two in front of 242 fans. The Scotland left-back was a standout on Tuesday night as Jurgen Klopp’s men survived a first-half siege to win 2-1 at Man City and seal a 5-1 aggregate romp. The atmosphere at a rocking Etihad was a far cry from the same date in 2013 when Robbo was turning out for Queen’s Park in a 2-0 defeat at Annan. Now Robbo, 23, is desperate to crown his incredible rise to fame by helping BY FRASER WILSON Liverpool clinch their sixth European Cup.

Asked if his achievement ranks as a career highlight the defender, speaking to Liverpool’s website, said: “I would say so!

“Getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League as a wee boy you grow up watching these tournaments and you think what it’s like to play in it.

“We’ve just knocked out one of the best teams in Europe at the moment.

“Luckily we have managed to do that and we are in the semi-final.

“Hopefully I will get a chance to play in the games and lead this club back to a final – and hopefully a sixth Champions League.”

Robertson, who returned from injury to play a key role in the victory, hopes to join the growing list of Scottish winners of the trophy by securing a place in the Final in Kiev in May.

“There is going to be no easy tie in semi-final. Everyone is fighting for their lives to try to get into this final and we’ll be no different.”

Liverpool team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain claimed the epic victory proves Klopp’s side are a match for anyone and said they must use the two wins over City – as well as January’s 4-3 Premier League victory over them to mount a sustained title challenge next season.

It is 28 years since Liverpool last won the title and OxladeChamberlain said: “This is a massive confidence-booster for us.

“To beat City twice is no easy feat. We did it twice in a week and we also did it at an earlier stage this season.

“It just shows to us that when we’re at the races and at the right level we can beat anyone in this league.

“Now it’s on us – whoever we get in the next round – to go and prove we can beat people in Europe as well.”
