Only one party have a clear path through the Brexit mess

-

THE Brexit saga rumbles on, with voters still in the dark about our future relationship with Europe.

There were two important interventions at the weekend.

First, former Labour leader Neil Kinnock – a voice of authority with years of political experience under his belt – explained just how important it is for MPs to vote for membership of the single market.

Secondly, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard suggested a way to break the impasse regarding the Brexit “power-grab” row between Westminster and Holyrood, calling for cross-party talks.

Labour may not be in power in either parliament but they are the party who hold the cards when it comes to the type of Brexit we end up with.

It’s no secret that I’d like to halt the process altogether, and I support a People’s Vote on the deal that Theresa May brings to the Commons.

But if we are to leave the EU, it’s vital that we choose the least-worst option for our economy so that we can protect as many jobs as possible.

That is permanent UK membership of the European single market, and Labour MPs must back that in a vote in the Commons in the coming weeks.

First, Holyrood will vote on the EU Withdrawal Bill. Labour support the Scottish Government’s attempts to prevent a Westminster power grab, but neither government appear interested in ending the dispute.

The Tories and the SNP should accept Leonard’s proposal for talks between all parties so that we can reach an agreement.
