WRIGHT: I GOT IT ALL WRONG

- DARTS

PETER WRIGHT took the blame for Scotland’s World Cup agony last night as the Dutch lifted their fourth title in Frankfurt.

The world No.2 and partner Gary Anderson missed out in their bid to claim the trophy for the first time after losing 3-1 in the final to Holland.

In-form duo Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld stormed to success but Wright was devastated.

Scotland never led in the showdown after Snakebite lost the opening singles game to van Gerwen.

Anderson levelled the tie in the second match by sinking van Barneveld but the critical pairs contest was won by Holland and Wright held his hands up for three crucial missed darts at a key point in that game.

He said: “We had a good time but I mucked up.

“I’ll be back next year and I’ll have practised that double 16 a bit more. We won’t make that many mistakes again.”

Holland won that pairs match to swing the clash firmly in their favour and MVG hammered Ando in match four to leave BY CRAIG SWAN Scotland without success at the World Cup again.

Anderson and Wright gave themselves a crack by surviving a fightback from Aussies Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson in the semis.

Having dismantled Japan in the quarters without losing a single leg, the Scots looked to be cruising in their lastfour match as Wright defeated Whitlock in the opening singles tie.

But Kyle Anderson’s stunning win over his namesake Gary in the second singles game moved the contest into a deciding doubles clash.

Scotland again took charge leading 3-0 in the first to four contest only for Wright to miss five darts at double.

The Aussies hit back and levelled at 3-3 but Snakebite recovered with a double 12 in the final-leg shootout to win it before the Dutch dynamos blasted their dreams.

Van Gerwen said: “Any tournament you play you want to win but it’s always extra special as a team for your country.”
